Why You Should Be Ready to Bike to Work After Re-Opening

While some cities have already re-opened, many places are still gearing up to get everyone back to their livelihoods. By now, I think we all understand that even though our cities are re-opening, we will not exactly be going back to our “old normal.” Hopefully, we are all enthusiastic to work towards establishing our “new normal.”

Cities around the world are getting ready to facilitate more cycling. Sawako began making stylish cycling helmets because she believes that cycling has the power to help create a healthy society. And we know that you believe that, too.

So now, we want to help you be ready for the “new normal” by highlighting a few reasons that you should be ready to ride your bike long after re-opening. As we face the future after COVID-19 globally, it is even more important to be ready to cycle for the following reasons.

1. Bicycling is a safely distanced mode of transportation.

Probably, you are now completely averse to riding a sardine-packed subway to work. And you would be right to choose an alternative to driving when possible. Fortunately, transportation leaders around the world are getting ready to facilitate cycling while the COVID-19 is still a threat to our public health.

According to The Guardian, the UK transport secretary, Grant Shapps said “Even when every train, bus, and tram is fully restored to service, this will not be enough…Social distancing measures mean that everyone who travels will need to contribute to meeting this capacity challenge. Changing our behaviour is the single biggest thing that’s beaten back this virus.”

    2. Bicycling instead of driving helps preserve the good air quality we’ve observed during shutdown.

Paris is planning on keeping its streets car-free after the coronavirus lockdown, and we are excited to embrace more measures to encourage cycling for a healthier, happier world.

According to this article by ArchDaily, cities around the world are currently rethinking transportation policies to avoid transmission of the coronavirus. The mayor of Paris is setting a plan to continue limits on car usage after the shutdown, saying “pollution joined with coronavirus is a particularly dangerous cocktail.”

    3. Cycling is cheaper.

According to The Morning Call, municipalities are looking at huge revenue losses. “From a financial perspective, bicycling makes tremendous sense, not only for the individual rider, who can get around far more cheaply on a bike than in a car, but also for municipalities that provide and maintain the infrastructure we all use to get around.”

We hope that you will join us in embracing a new normal that includes more cycle-friendly municipalities across the world. Cycling is a safely-distanced mode of transportation, preserves air quality, and is financially responsible as we move toward a sustainable society.

Please share this article with someone to encourage each other to be ready to cycle.
