I received the best surprise on February 13 of last year. I was at home when there was a knock at the door. I opened the door to find a present that was unexpected but very welcome: a pizza delivery.

Just as I was wondering who my secret admirer could be, I received a text from my best friend. She was hundreds of miles away at grad school.

It said, “Happy Galentine’s Day.” 

To receive a thoughtful gift from my best friend meant so much to me. I decided then and there that Galentine's Day was my new favorite holiday.

Where does Galentine’s Day come from?

It was invented by the brilliant Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope on NBC’s show Parks and Recreation. Leslie gathers her friends for waffles and says,

Every February 13, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.
